The Rugged Rocks (from English rugged , rocky, rugged, 'fissured ) are a small group of clip rocks in the archipelago of South Shetland Islands . They are located just north of Renier Point on the west side of the southern entrance to McFarlane Strait .
The rocks were already known to the first seal hunters in the South Shetland Islands and are shown on a map by the British seal hunter George Powell from 1822. They were given their descriptive name by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations , who re-mapped them in 1935.
