Oberwangen ruins

The Oberwangen ruins are the ruins of a medieval residential tower from the 12th century in the municipality of Köniz in the canton of Bern .

Location and description

The ruin is on the Cheerhübeli. The floor plan of the rectangular residential tower measures 13.5 × 15 meters, the wall thickness at the base is 2.2 meters.

history

The residential tower was very likely the ancestral castle of the Knights of Wangen. The von Wangen family was first mentioned in a document in 1142. In 1298 the castle was destroyed by the city-state of Bern and not rebuilt ( Battle of Dornbühl ).

Today the ruin is owned by the Oberwangen local association and is a lookout point with a barbecue area.
