Ruma (stonemason)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruma was a Nabatean stonemason who worked in the Arab city of Hegra in the first century .

He is named in inscriptions on two facades of stair tombs in Hegra together with Abd'obodat as the responsible stonemason. According to the inscriptions, both were built in the 40th year of the Nabatean king Aretas IV , which is why Ruma's creative period must have included the year 31/32 AD. Since he signed the facades together with Abd'obodat, Ruma is counted among the members of his workshop. He is therefore one of the oldest representatives of one of the two main schools of stone masons in Hegra.
