The Round Square ( Ukrainian Кругла площа ; Russian Круглая площадь ) is the most important square, landmark and center of the Ukrainian city of Poltava and an urban and architectural monument of national importance.
The round square is formed by a holistic classical ensemble around a circular area with a central park. The square was originally named after the Russian Emperor Alexander I. Olexanderiwska ( Олекса́ндрівська ).
The basis of the architectural ensemble of the square with a diameter of 345 m and an area of 93,500 m² lies in the years 1805–1841. In the years 1840–1842 the central part of the square was planted with trees and turned into a park with a ring road and eight radial paths, the October Park ( Жовтневий парк ). There is now a shopping center below the square.
Honor column
In the center of the square is an honorary column ( Монумент Слави ) over 16 meters high, inaugurated in memory of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava on June 27, 1811 . The column, commissioned by the then Governor General of Little Russia Alexei Kurakin and the sculptor Ščedrin , stands on a base made of light gray granite, modeled on a fortress and equipped with 18 cannons. On its tip is a golden eagle with outspread wings, holding a branch of laurel in its beak.
