history

Top floor of the silo

The striking brick building was built by Heinrich Hansen in 1931 as a grain silo for a feed factory. The construction time was five months, the inauguration took place on December 22, 1931.

Around 3,500 tons of grain could be stored in the trapezoidal silo cells. The building in the style of New Objectivity with echoes of the heritage architecture was entered in the monument register in 1972 and has not been used as a silo since 1986.

It was planned to temporarily convert the building into a health center and expand it into a cinema center. In 2008 a restaurant was set up on the ground floor of the round silo. During the renovation, a harbor crane belonging to the building, which is also under monument protection, was demolished. The former silo is one of the landmarks of Eckernförd.

The construction drawings for the round silo are in the town hall in Eckernförde.
