Runestone from Bro

The rune stone of Bro (also called Assurs sten ; Samnordisk runtextdatabas U 617) in the municipality of Upplands-Bro in Uppland in Sweden stands in a wood, about 300 m north of the church of Bro, in whose wall it was walled up until 1866.

It is a little ornate rune stone in the ancient style with a double, therefore very long snake ornament and a central cross. It is one of the Hakon Jarl rune stones and, alongside Gårdstångasten 2 (DR 330), one of the few rune stones that confirm that the Vikings called themselves Vikings. The inscription reads:

"Kinluk × hulmkis × tutiʀ × systiʀ × sukruþaʀ × auk × þaiʀa × kaus × aun × lit × keara × bru × þesi × auk × raisa × stain × þina × eftiʀ × asur × bunta · sin × sun × hakunaʀ × iarls × saʀ × uaʀ × uikika × uaurþr × miþ × kaeti × kuþ × ialbi × ans × nu × aut × uk × salu "

Translated: “Ginnlaug, Holmgaeir's daughter, sister Sygroths and Gauts, she had this bridge made and this stone built for Assur, her husband, the son of Jarls Håkon. He was Wart against the Vikings (together) with Gaeitir. God help his spirit and his soul. "

The Håkon Jarl , whose son Assur perished while defending his homeland against the Vikings , cannot be the historical Norwegian ruler Håkon Jarl (935–955), the vassal of Harald Blue Tooth , whose sons were not named Assur. Therefore, a Swedish Jarl of the same name from around 1000 AD, who has remained unknown, must be meant. A (presumably different) Håkon Jarl is also mentioned on the runestone U 16.
