Grindheim stone cross

The Grindheim rune stone is located at the Grindheimer Church east of Etne in Fylke Vestland in Norway .

Leaning against the church wall of the Grindheim church, there is a rune stone around 3.75 meters high, 1.0 meters wide and 20 cm thick . It was found in the wall of the church and originally came from one of the neighboring farms. When the old church was rebuilt, the stone was removed and placed on the wall of the new church, where it was fastened with iron bands.

The rune stone has an almost polished surface. The runic inscription in the younger Futhark runs from top to bottom along the narrow side of the stone. It dates from the year 1000 to 1050 AD and reads: "Tormod built this stone in memory of Tormod Svidande, his father". The name "Svidande" is probably a nickname and means something like "he who burns".

The old stone cross from Grindheim ( Norwegian Grindheimkrossen ) was found in the garden of a nearby farm and set up at the church. The cross dates from around AD 1100, is about two meters high and has smooth sides. The broken top was not found, so that it now has the shape of a dew cross .
