U 1164 from Stora Runhällen

The runestone from Stora Runhällen (No. U 1164 ) in the parish of Västerlövsta, in the municipality of Heby in Uppland in Sweden , is dated to the Viking Age (800-1050 AD). The Runenstein of granite is 1.66 cm thick meters high, 1.60 meters wide and 10 to 25 The stone is on road 56 from Heby in the direction of Gävle, at the junction to Runhällen. There is also a rune stone museum there.

The stone was repainted in 1964 and 1986 and realigned in 1968. It is damaged on its left side and above, where about 35 cm is missing. The picture in Urnes style shows a snake fighting " the big beast ".

The inscription reads: Ernlaug erected this stone in memory of ... his ... Livsten carved the runes .

According to Olof Grau (1722–1774), who described the stone in the middle of the 18th century, it is said to have been erected as a memorial after a battle between the kings of Uppsala and Hälsingland. The king and his son were killed. The father was buried here, while his son is said to rest at the stone of Lilla Runhällen (U 1181). This interpretation is outdated, U 1181 was recognized as one of the 30 England rune stones .

Livsten (also Lifsteinn) was an Uppland rune scratcher who "inscribed " 18 rune stones between 1030 and 1050 AD in western and southwestern Uppland, of which he also signed U 796, U 1152, U 1158 and Vs 29. His works are characterized by large four-legged friends and intricate ornaments.
