Runestones at the Tumbo kyrka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The rune stones at the Tumbo kyrka are several in or near the church Tumbo kyrka northwest of Eskilstuna in Sodermanland in Sweden found rune stones .

The newest rune stone is a find from 1965 (Sö SB 1965; 12), which was found as a cornerstone of the south wall during the church repair. The rune stone has a serpent ribbon and an Irish belt . It bears the mysterious text: "Snake and Fastger and Tora had to travel for Vive, her brother".

The second new find was the stone Sö Fv1958; 242, discovered in 1958 and immured in the church wall. The inscription on the stone reads: "Anund and Brune put this stone after piston". Piston, to which the stone is dedicated, previously placed the rune stone Sö 362, the text of which reads: "Piston and Jule placed the stone after Ingvar, his brother". It is pretty certain that the same carver created most of the stones around the church.

The piston mentioned on both stones is likely to be the same, so that the stones created in early Christian times (12th or 13th century) follow each other directly. The serpentine ribbon shows (also with the stones Sö 84 and Sö 363) neither head nor tail. In the "Kreuzbandstil" (Swedish corset band), the snake band begins and ends in the cross. The local style is only common in western Södermanland. Only the three (probably older) stones in the cemetery still show the Irish paddock. There are more rune stones at the church, including stones Sö 82 and Sö 84 discovered in the cemetery in 1930 and stones Sö 362 and Sö 363 as well as a grave ball .
