The independent Heidelberg student newspaper ruprecht has 10,000 copies of the highest circulation of its kind in Germany. The paper appears six times a year and is distributed free of charge in front of the cafeterias of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and displayed in numerous institutes.

history

Since 1987 the ruprecht , which until 1991 still called itself pothole , has been published without interruption. The thematic focus is on local university policy. Local reporting from Heidelberg , topics related to student life, culture, reports on scientific projects at Heidelberg universities and a satirical page complete the range of content.

As an independent student newspaper , ruprecht is not committed to any group or ideology. To ensure thematic and journalistic independence, the paper is financed exclusively through advertisements. The newspaper appears in the Berlin format and has a length of 12 to 16 pages. Since the June 2006 edition of the ruprecht has been published in color. Until May 2013, the ruprecht always described itself in the subtitle as gender-neutral as "Heidelberger Student (inside) newspaper" or later as "Heidelberger Studentenzeitung". The renaming to "Studentenzeitung", which took place in May 2013 as part of a layout relaunch of the print and online edition, was criticized by many readers. Since 2019 ruprecht has been calling itself a gender-neutral "student newspaper ".

The ruprecht is created entirely through the voluntary commitment of students from a wide variety of disciplines and has not yet had an editor-in-chief. The editorial tasks, starting with the writing of the articles over the layout, photography and acquisition of the advertising customers up to the distribution and mailing of the newspaper, are organized and implemented independently by the editors.

First the newspaper was produced on the 3rd floor of the so-called KASTRA, Lauerstraße 1, then in a Heidelberg shared apartment . However, since the 1990s ruprecht has been created under the umbrella of the Heidelberg Student Union Conference (FSK). Due to its status as an "independent working group", the ruprecht employees are allowed to use an editorial office and the existing infrastructure there.

In addition to the newspaper, the editorial team produces special editions for freshmen at the beginning of each semester, while ruprecht editors run the newspaper for the international summer course at Heidelberg University Spektakel , which is produced together with exchange students, and an online magazine. From 1997 to 2013, the ruprecht editorial team also maintained the largest internet database of active student newspapers in German-speaking countries.

The association ruprecht e. V. as editor. In the same year, former editors of the newspaper founded the association for the promotion of young media students in the Rhine-Neckar Delta doppelkeks . The association organizes several journalistic training courses every year, the media workshops, and provides information in its monthly newsletter about journalistic training opportunities and information on starting a career in the media.

Awards

The ruprecht won the Pro Campus Presse Award 2007 and 2019. The annual competition of the "Pro Campus Presse" initiative honors the best student newspapers in German-speaking countries. In 2007 the jury praised the newspaper for its "successful variety of journalistic forms of presentation, its high text quality and well thought-out page structure". The newspaper received first place in 2019 for its good presentation and "outstandingly interesting mix of topics". The newspaper hits the zeitgeist and writes about both Memelords and pubs that are over 180 years old. In 2007, 43 student publications took part in the competition. For the 2019 award, the initiative did not provide the number of editorial offices that had taken part in the competition.

In 2006 ruprecht took second place (33 participants). In 2005 (57), 2009 (41), 2013 and 2014 (around 30 each), the newspaper placed four to ten.
