Ernst Schaumann (painter)
Ernst Schaumann the Elder J. (born February 7, 1890 in Königsberg , † October 25, 1955 in Pramort on Zingst ) was an East Prussian painter .
Life
Born as the son of the landscape painter of the same name (see below) in Königsberg, Schaumann first completed an apprenticeship as a businessman before attending the Königsberg Art Academy . There he was a student of Otto Heichert and Ludwig Dettmann. From 1909 to 1914 he continued his studies at the Berlin Art Academy . When the First World War broke out , Schaumann volunteered and was employed as a war painter, where he soon found attention as a vivid portrayal of the events. After the First World War, Schaumann lived as a freelance artist in Warnicken . He kept horses on his settlement site in order to be able to study their movements. His horse pictures are therefore also among his masterpieces. He also executed wall paintings in public buildings and authorities, which, however, like most of his work, were destroyed in the Second World War.
His other passion was depicting contemporary musicians. In the late 1910s, he created drawings by Heinrich Schlusnus , Richard Strauss , Hans Pfitzner and Wilhelm Furtwängler .
During the Second World War , Schaumann worked again as a war painter. Until his expulsion in 1948, he lived in Königsberg and then in Teltow , Potsdam district , from commissioned work. After his economic situation improved, he was often a summer guest in Ahrenshoop . The dune area of the Zingst peninsula reminded him of his former home on the Curonian Spit .
Ernst Schaumann the Elder J. died in Pramort on Zingst; He was buried in the cemetery in Ahrenshoop.
