Rurima Island is a small island in the Bay of Plenty in the north of the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The island, which is 973 m long and 324 m at its widest point, is located around 17 km northwest of Whakatāne and around 8.5 km north of the mouth of the Rangitaiki River . Around 715 m east of the island is the island of Moutoki Island, which is surrounded by reefs, and another 7 km southeast of the island is the 353 m high island of Moutohora Island .

The island, which covers an area of ​​6 hectares, consists of a 53 m high overgrown elevation in the middle, a lagoon that extends to the northeast and is surrounded by rocks, and a flat headland that connects to the southwest and one on both coastlines Has sandy beach. A 10 m high overgrown elevation closes the headland.

Administratively, Rurima Island belongs to the Bay of Plenty region .

The area around the island is volcanically active, from the boat you can observe volcanic gas bubbles rising in the sea.

Owner of the island

The island is owned by the Iwi (tribe) of the Ngati Awa from Whakatāne .

Flora and fauna

On the island, which is overgrown with Pohutukawa trees ( Metrosideros excelsa ) and Petrel scrub ( Hymenanthra novaezelandiae ), 47 different species of lichen and bridge lizards have been found.

The area around the island is used for snorkeling and kayaking. The island can be reached in 40 minutes by boat from Whatakane .
