Rusinga Island is a Kenyan island in Lake Victoria . The island is located in the eastern part of the lake and is about 16 kilometers long and at its widest point 5 kilometers wide. It is connected to Mbita Point on mainland Kenya by a causeway .
geology
Rusinga is an important fossil deposit . The Rusinga Group of the Lower and Middle Miocene , a rock unit that consists of several formations and whose fossil-rich members are the Hiwegi and Kulu Formations , should be emphasized here . It is from here that early representatives of the human race come from Proconsul and Nyanzapithecus . In addition, Myorycteropus is an ancestor of the aardvark and Miorhynchocyon is a member of the elephant dog . A specialty is among other things parageogals , an African form of the tenreks, which are only found in Madagascar today . In contrast, the finds from the Wasiriya Beds , which date to the Upper Pleistocene , are much more recent . Several species of antelope were recovered from the deposits, including the hartebeest Rusingoryx .
population
The island was settled by refugees from what is now Uganda several centuries ago . These people belonged to the Luo ethnic group . The language of large parts of the island's population is Dho Luo . The official languages English and Swahili are also used. Most of the island's residents make a living from agriculture , fishing or tourism . The most common religion on Rusinga is Christianity , to which 84% of the islanders belong. 12% of the residents of Rusinga form a Muslim minority.
tourism
Due to its location, the island is also popular with tourists. In addition to the island's nature, fishing is an attraction. There are very large perch around Rusinga Island , making the island attractive for anglers. The island is also rich in species, especially bird species can be found on the island. The island's elevations are popular hiking destinations, as they offer a view of Lake Victoria.
