Russarö is an island south of Hanko . As a restricted military area, it is not open to the public. On the island there is a lighthouse built in 1863 and a weather station belonging to the Finnish Meteorological Institute .

history

As part of the Finland intervention on April 3, 1918, the large German ships Posen and Westphalia lay in front of Rossarö and imperial troops occupied the signal station on the island.

During the Winter War , on December 1, 1939, the Soviet cruiser Kirov and the destroyers Stremitelnyi and Smetlivyi attacked the coastal fortifications on Russarö. In a brief exchange of fire, Stremitelnyi and Kirov were hit and the Soviet unit withdrew from the action. Seventeen men from the Kirov crew died and another 30 were wounded.
