The Russell Fjord ( English Russell Fiord ) a fjord in the northwest of the Panhandle of Alaska .

The fjord flows into Disenchantment Bay in the northeast of Yakutat Bay . The opening to Disenchantment Bay is periodically closed at Gilbert Point by the Hubbard Glacier . The break of the Hubbard Glacier on August 14, 2002, which cut off Russell Fjord from Disenchantment Bay for around a month, was the second largest man-made glacier run to date .

In 1980 the United States Congress designated the fjord and the surrounding area with a total area of ​​1,411 km² under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act as Wilderness Area , the strictest class of nature reserves in the United States, in which human interference with nature is minimal are made. The Russell Fjord Wilderness borders the Wrangell-Saint Elias Wilderness in the northwest . It is administered by the United States Forest Service .

The fjord is about 50 km long and 3.5 km wide. The fjord is fed by the tributary Beasley Creek and the Hidden Glacier . The Nunatak Fjord (Nunatak Fiord), fed by the East Nunatak Glacier and West Nunatak Glacier , branches off to the right .
