The Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church (Russian Российская православная автономная церковь) is an Orthodox Church in Russia and other countries. It is not recognized as canonical by other Orthodox churches .

The church consists of five ore and five eparchies in Russia, Lithuania , Georgia and parishes in other countries. In 2009 it had 90 congregations and 60 priests. It is directed by the Metropolitan of Suzdal and Vladimir.

history

In 1990 Archimandrite Valentin founded a Russian Orthodox Free Church with several parishes in Suzdal and the surrounding area. The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad accepted the new church and named Valentine Bishop of Suzdal. Other congregations in different parts of Russia joined, in 1992 also some congregations of the former catacomb church .

In 1993, Bishop Valentin and Archbishop Lasar left the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and in 1994 formed an independent Temporary Higher Administration of the Russian Orthodox Free Church . They ordained three new bishops. In 1995 Archbishop Lasar left the church. In 1996 the church had six bishops and about 150 parishes.

In 1998 it was renamed the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church when it was officially registered at the suggestion of the registration authority.

In 2002, Bishop Valentin was convicted of the sexual abuse of minors by a court in Suzdal. In 2004 a Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church was formed in America . In 2006, most congregations outside of the former Soviet Union left the Church because of Archbishop Valentin’s poor administration. In the years that followed, several other clergy and congregations left the Church. Metropolitan Valentin died in 2012. In 2014 a congregation in Italy joined the Church, in 2016 a congregation in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
