geography
Russki is 39 km long and 14 km wide with an area of 306 km². The island consists of sand and slate and rises in its central part to a height of 39 m. The Lütke Islands are south of Russki . Its northernmost, Shileiko , is located directly in front of the southwestern tip of Russki, the bungee peninsula which ends in the Mys Ostry and which in turn represents the south-eastern boundary of the Great Bay. Russki and the Lütke Islands are separated from the southern part of the Nordenskiöld Archipelago by the Lenin Strait.
history
In 1935, the Northern Sea Route Headquarters built a weather station near the northernmost point of the island to collect meteorological data. The station also served to monitor the weather on Wilkizkistraße and the Kara Sea , and measurements of the ice thickness in the vicinity of the station were also taken.
On August 27, 1942, the Russian icebreaker Sibirjakow sank near Russki after an unequal battle with the German battleship Admiral Scheer , which was supposed to disrupt the arctic supply route of the USSR as part of the Wunderland company .
In 1999 the arctic station on Russky was closed. Until recently it was used to observe the weather or the tundric flora and fauna .
