Rustam Sodiqovich Azimov ( Cyrillic Рустам Содиқович Азимов ; born September 20, 1958 in Tashkent ) is an Uzbek politician, first deputy prime minister of Uzbekistan between 2005 and 2017. He was also the country's finance minister from 1998 to 2000 and from 2005 to 2016.

biography

Asimov studied history at the Tashkent State University and economics at the Tashkent Institute for Irrigation and Melioration . He then obtained his master's degree from the University of Oxford .

In 1990 Asimov became chairman of Innovation Commercial Bank Ipak Yuli. Between 1991 and 1998 he was Chairman of the Board of the Uzbek National Bank for External Economic Activities and at the same time led a financial project of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Uzbekistan.

In 1998 Asimov was appointed Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan. In August 2000, he rose to become Deputy Prime Minister. A few months later he took over the administration of the Ministry of Macroeconomics and Statistics, which was officially abolished in December 2002.

In February 2005, Asimov was promoted to First Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. At the same time, he held the post of economics minister and finance minister for almost ten years. Azimov was negotiated as one of the most promising successors to President Islom Karimov, who died in 2016 .

When Shavkat Mirziyoyev came to power in December 2016, the personal relationship of trust between him and Asimov deteriorated. In public appearances, the President accused Asimov of being responsible for the banking crisis in Uzbekistan. After massive criticism, Asimov resigned from his post as First Deputy Prime Minister in June 2017.
