The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is a memorial site for former American President Rutherford B. Hayes in Fremont , Ohio . It consists of a library, the Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library , and a museum in Spiegel Grove , the former Hayes' estate. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center opened in 1916. The Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library is thus the first actual presidential library and the only one for a 19th century presidency. The library is funded by the Ohio Historical Society and private foundationsHayes Presidential Center Inc. worn. Franklin Delano Roosevelt later introduced the tradition of establishing a Presidential Center after the end of a presidency.

The library holds the twelve thousand volume personal library of Rutherford B. Hayes and archival material from his military and political career, particularly his presidency from 1877–81. The library now contains 70,000 volumes as well as newspapers and magazines from the period from the Civil War to the eve of the First World War .

The Spiegel Grove property was granted National Historic Landmark status in January 1964 . In October 1966, it was entered as a structure on the National Register of Historic Places under the name Rutherford B. Hayes House .

Visitors

The library is public and admission is free. The library is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding public holidays. The reading room is on the second floor. Disabled people can register their visit to the library in order to receive the necessary assistance. Limited research assignments are processed for a fee. Specialty

The library has pursued Rutherford B. Hayes' interests and focuses on the one hand on the history of the United States from 1850 to 1917, in particular the American Civil War, Reconstruction, the Spanish-American War, the railroad, education, the history of blacks and relations between the Indians and the government. On the other hand, the history of Ohio is of particular interest in the Sandusky River Valley and the northwest. There is an extensive genealogical collection. The library not only contains history books for almost every county of Ohio, but also for many counties in other states. The library is constantly expanding its holdings and donations or bequests are always welcome. The materials will also be made available online.
