The Ryn Desert or Ryn Peski ( Russian Рын-пески , Kazakh Нарын құмы , Narın qumı ) is a desert in western Kazakhstan and in Astrakhan Oblast in southeastern Russia . It lies north of the Caspian Sea and southeast of the Volga Highlands , between the lower reaches of the Volga and Urals rivers .
