With the Saxon Animal Welfare Medal , also known as the Johann Georg Palitzsch Medal , the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Consumer Protection honors personalities in the Free State of Saxony who have made special contributions in the field of animal welfare. It is awarded by the Saxon State Minister responsible for animal welfare. A certificate will be issued for the award. The medal was donated on September 6, 2000 by the minister of the department at the time, Hans Geisler .

The medal bears the name of the well-known Dresden farmer, recognized lay astronomer and polymath Johann Georg Palitzsch (1723–1788).

Award regulations and appearance

The Saxon Animal Welfare Medal is awarded in a joint initiative with the Saxon State Veterinary Association and the Saxon State Animal Protection Association for special merits in the field of animal welfare.

The medal made of patinated white metal, which is awarded annually on the occasion of World Animal Protection Day (October 4th) by the responsible Saxon State Minister together with the award certificate, has a diameter of 100 mm and is not wearable. On its obverse it shows the portrait of the name giver of the medal and the inscription JOH. GEORG PALITZSCH 1723–1788.BAUERNASTRONOM.NATURKUNDIGER.PROHLIS B. DRESDEN . The lapel of the medal shows a circular ornament in the center with a butterfly , an owl , a cat and a cattle head . This four symbolism is surrounded by a snake , whose body snakes out of the upper edge of the medal. A mouse is depicted on the head of the snake . The selected animal motifs cover the wide range of animal representatives, insect-reptile-bird-mammal as well as their use of pet-farm animal-pet-wild animal-experimental animal. The inscription FREISTAAT SACHSEN , whose words are interrupted by the coat of arms of the Free State, can be read under these animal motifs . At the end of the reverse of the medal is the almost semicircular inscription OBLIGED TO PROTECT ANIMALS . The number of annual awards is limited to a maximum of three medals in order to reflect the importance of the award.

The medal is endowed with prize money of 4,000 euros.

Eligibility to propose and worthiness

All persons and groups of people, organizations and agencies, local authorities and other animal welfare institutions in the Free State of Saxony are eligible to make proposals in the field of animal welfare. Both individuals and entire groups of people can be proposed. The proposals themselves are to be submitted to the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Youth and Family by June 30th of the year. The individual assessment by the Saxon State Advisory Board for Animal Welfare, which then forwards the proposal to the responsible minister of state, is responsible for the award-worthiness.
