Jörg Junhold (born March 26, 1964 in Ortrand ) is a German veterinarian . Since 1997 he has been director of the Leipzig Zoo . He has been President of the Association of Zoological Gardens (VDZ) since 2019 .

Junhold initiated the strategic realignment of the zoo and developed the concept for the zoo of the future . Under his leadership, the Leipzig Zoo has become a magnet for visitors. When it started in 1997, the zoo had 678,000 visitors, by 2008 it was 1.67 million. This puts the zoo in fourth place in a nationwide comparison.

The son of a veterinarian passed his university entrance qualification in Riesa in 1983 as part of his vocational training with high school diploma . After completing military service in the NVA from 1983 to 1985 in Halle (Saale) , he studied veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1985 to 1990 . From 1990 he completed a research degree at the Surgical Veterinary Clinic of the University of Leipzig and was awarded a Dr. med. vet. PhD . In addition to his research studies, he started working as a research assistant in marketing management at Effem GmbH , a manufacturer of pet food, in September 1992 . Until 1997 he was employed at Effem.

In 1997, Junhold was selected from over 50 applicants as the first manager of the Leipzig Zoo. He started his service on November 1, 1997. When Zoo Leipzig GmbH was founded on August 1, 2000, Junhold was appointed managing director.

On October 7, 2011, Junhold was elected President of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

In June 2019 Junhold was elected President of the Association of Zoological Gardens for three years .

Jörg Junhold is married and has a daughter and a son.

Honors

In 2001, Junhold received the Osgar Media Prize for building the lion savannah and the world's largest ape enclosure , Pongoland .

In 2016 he was honored with the Johann Georg Palitzsch Medal for his commitment to housing zoo animals in natural habitats .
