Singing Hall

The singer hall was an event hall in Augsburg , which was built in 1900 and burned down completely in 1934 for an unknown cause.

history

At the end of the 19th century there was no event hall in Augsburg that would have offered several thousand festival guests enough space. In order to remedy this problem, the city made plans to build a new hall. One of the draftsmen was Jean Keller , who planned the construction of a Bismarck Hall in the city garden . Due to the high calculated costs, the project was initially not pursued by the city.

After Augsburg was chosen as the venue for the Swabian-Bavarian Singers' Association that took place in July 1900, the lack of a suitable venue became an urgent problem. The festival committee then saw it as necessary to erect a temporary structure with a capacity of up to 5,000 festival visitors for the song festival. The master carpenter commissioned for this made the proposal to acquire an existing wooden machine hall in Munich and then transport it in individual parts to Augsburg. Since the hall was sufficiently large (about 75 meters long and 32 meters wide) and the singer association and the city agreed on the cost sharing and the new location, the purchase was completed and the hall was then moved to the city garden. There the hall was placed against the magnificent facade of an exhibition building and a main entrance as well as toilets and utility rooms were added.

After the song festival it was found that the hall had done its job perfectly and should therefore continue to serve as an event location. The name “Singer Hall” was also quickly adopted. In the decades that followed, the hall was used again and again for all kinds of conferences and exhibitions as well as celebrations of all kinds.

On the night of April 30th to May 1st, 1934, a fire broke out in the building. Despite the attempts to extinguish the fire, the singer hall could not be saved. The cause of the fire has never been officially clarified. However, the fire was used by the National Socialists as an opportunity to arrest suspected persons (mostly political opponents).

In the same year the plan was made to build a large town hall in the town garden and in Wittelsbacher Park as a replacement for the singer hall.
