Sõmerpalu (German: Sommerpahlen ) is a former rural community in the Estonian district of Võru with an area of ​​181.6 km². It had 1746 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Sõmerpalu has been part of the rural municipality of Võru since 2017 .

Sõmerpalu is 10 km west of Võru and 65 km from Tartu . In addition to the main town of Sõmerpalu, the rural community included the 34 villages of Alakülä, Alapõdra, Haava, Haidaku, Haamaste, Hargi, Heeska, Horma, Hutita, Hänike, Järvere, Kahro, Keema, Kurenurme, Kärgula, Lakovitsa, Leiso, Liiva, Lilli-Anne, Linnamäe, Majala, Mustassaare, Mustja, Mäekülä, Osula, Pritsi, Pulli, Punakülä, Rauskapalu, Rummi, Sulbi, Udsali and Varese.

From 1911 to 1939 there was a Russian-German farmers' settlement with around 40 families, which was called Heimtal. The members came from the Ukrainian Volyn Oblast and dedicated themselves to agriculture. They were resettled from Estonia in 1939 at the instigation of the German government, together with the majority of the Baltic Germans .

Sommerpahlen Castle

A manor in Sommerpahlen was built as a vassal castle of the Livonian Order , of which only a few ruins have survived to this day. In the 1860s, the von Möller family owned the classicist castle. According to the historical division, the estate belonged to the Urvaste / Anzen parish , Võrumaa / Werro district .
