Söderarms skärgård ( German  Söderarms archipelago ) is a 15 kilometer long and 7.5 kilometer wide lake area between Kapellskär and Ålands hav in the Swedish Baltic Sea .

The archipelago consists of hundreds of small islands , holmen , skerries and cobbs (small, round and flat islands in the archipelago). It is bordered on the east by the Åland Sea in the north to the fairway of Furusund , on the west by Rankaröfjärden and on the south by a deep trough extending from Uddjupet to Vidinge extends.

Islands

Of the many islands in Söderarms skärgård, the most famous is Inre Hamnskär . It is the largest island in the archipelago and is known for its splendor of flowers and orchids . The island of Manskär is almost as well known. The reason is that there is a radar station there, which forms a landmark that can be seen from afar. Yttre Hamnskär was largely used for national defense. Another well-known island is Torskär . There is the Söderarms skärgård lighthouse.

Fairways

Although Söderarms skärgård is full of shallows and rocks, several thousand ships pass the area every day along the route at Furusund at the northern end of the archipelago. There is also an old route that the pilots used in the past. Today this is primarily used for water sports in the Uddjupet archipelago , in the Furusund fairway, at the same height as Nygrund. There are also two deep cuts that are used, for example, by the military to get to Yttre Hamnskär or south of Remmargrund to Inre Hamnskär. In addition to the lighthouse and the radar system on Manskär, there are also various buoys that mark the fairways or warn of impassable places.

Coastal artillery

In Söderarms skärgård was the first battery of the coastal artillery , which was equipped with automatic 12 centimeter tower cannons. These were built to replace the outdated, old, heavy coastal artillery. The artillery battery was stationed on Tyvskär with a measuring station on Torskär , Stora Högskär , Yttre Hamnskär and Karskär .

The coastal artillery fired its last salute at the end of 2002. This is no longer a branch of arms within the armed forces, but has been replaced by the amphibious corps. Today the Söderam battery is wound up and demolished, especially in the area of Yttre Hamnskär. There are still many traces of military activity on the other islands in Söderarms skärgård, but many of the islands have returned to their original, natural state. The old bunkers were walled up and the military landing stages torn down.
