The Södersjukhuset was built between 1937 and 1944 according to the plans of the architects Hjalmar Cerderström and Hermann Imhäuser . The planning was preceded by extensive research and study trips abroad. The house was inaugurated by King Gustav V on April 3, 1944 and was Scandinavia 's largest and most modern hospital at the time, and Sweden's largest building after its completion in 1953. The complex consists of two parallel groups of buildings, which are connected by four transverse structures. The white-painted, loosened facades give the large building a dominant but friendly appearance on the hill on the north bank of Årstaviken .

The hospital operations

In 1994 the hospital had Europe's largest emergency department with around 100,000 visits per year and around 200,000 care days per year. In the same year, a Disaster Emergency Centrum (DEMC) was also completed. It is located under the hospital, buried in the rock, on the premises of an original war hospital that was never used.

During the years 2000–2003, the hospital was completely renovated, the original appearance of the south facade was restored, and Europe's most modern imaging center was opened at the same time. Sweden's first emergency room for raped women was opened in 2005.

Today (2007) Södersjukhus is Stockholm's largest hospital with a usable area of 120,000 m², 545 care places and approx. 3,900 employees. The turnover was 2.9 billion SEK .
