The Südbrause in Leipzig Connewitz is a gastronomic agency called Cafe Suedbrause consisting of a former Volksbrausebad arose. The name refers to the location in the city and the prehistory. The building is a listed building .

Location and shape

The south shower is slightly elevated on the wedge-shaped open space that Kochstrasse forms when it joins the Connewitzer Kreuz and Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse . The meadow area is partly made of bush and framed by linden trees on the side of the street, some of which date from 1903.

The single-storey building has an almost square footprint of 13.5 × 14.5 meters. It is plastered gray and has entrances on the east and north sides. The historical access on the south side, which is no longer used, is framed with sandstone and the former inscription Volksbrausebad is still faintly recognizable. At the northeast corner of the building is a stylized metal woman in a dancing posture with the inn-internal name Lola . The hipped roof has dormer windows on three sides and is crowned by a turret with ventilation slots.

The guest room extends over two levels with cozy seating areas under the sloping roof. The restaurant has outdoor seating areas on the east and north sides.

history

In the last third of the 19th century, public baths were established in Germany, which were intended to offer the poorer sections of the population the opportunity for regular personal hygiene. The popular shower baths were a special form - from showers, the older name for showers. These facilities had "no bathing vessels and therefore no opportunity to deposit impurities and contagious agents", so they were pure shower baths.

Four public shower baths were built in Leipzig in the last decade of the 19th century: on Täubchenweg opposite Rabensteinplatz , in Asterstraße (today Balzacstraße), in Lindenau on Karl-Heine-Platz and finally in 1898 the one at Connewitzer Kreuz called Städtisches Volksbrausebad II Leipzig .

With increasing hygienic conditions in residential construction in the 20th century, public baths lost their importance. The Lindenauer Brausebad was used during the GDR era as a bar for the GDR National Front and is now, structurally modified, operated as a Gaya Dance Club Lounge.

Only the Connewitzer initially remained structurally unchanged. After a long vacancy, the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe used it from 1996 to 2000 as a terminal building for the Leipzig tram with ticket sales. In 2000 the building was renovated and the interior was redesigned as a south shower.
