Southern Antilles

The Southern Antilles - in analogy to the "northern" Antilles of the Caribbean - an arch of islands located in the South Atlantic, consisting of the Falkland Islands , South Georgia with the offshore Shag Rocks , Black Rock and Clerke Rocks , the South Sandwich Islands , the South Orkney Islands and the South Shetland Islands is made up of. The arch of the island, which is open to the west, encloses the Scotia Sea .

All of these islands are part of the Sub-Antarctic Islands .

The Falkland Islands as well as South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are also overseas territories of the United Kingdom . The other archipelagos fall under the Antarctic Treaty , but are still claimed by the United Kingdom and Argentina .

The term Southern Antilles was coined by the geologists Eduard Suess and Otto Nordenskjöld . In English, the South Antilles variant is also used .
