The southern woolly lemur ( Avahi meridionalis ) is a primate species from the lemur group . It was only described in 2006 as a separate species from the eastern woolly lemur .

Southern woolly lemurs reach a body length of 25 to 27 centimeters, the tail is 30 to 37 centimeters long. Their weight is 1.1 to 1.2 kilograms. The skin is as with all woolly dense and woolly, it is colored gray-brown on the head and on the back, the chest and the belly are light gray. The long, bushy tail is reddish brown. The head is rounded, the face is covered with short hair, the eyes are large, but the ears are small and partially hidden in the fur.

Like all lemurs, southern woolly lemurs live on the island of Madagascar . Their distribution area is in the southeast of the island, where they inhabit rain and coastal forests. The exact extent of their range is unclear, they are mainly known from the Andohahela reserve.

Little is known about the way these animals live. They are nocturnal and mostly stay in the trees, where they move vertically climbing and jumping. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, rarely they also eat buds and flowers. Like all woolly lemurs, they are likely to live in monogamous family groups.

Their degree of risk is also unclear. The IUCN lists the species under “too little data available” ( data deficient ).
