The association of the Südwestfälische Freilichtbühne eV was founded in 1954. In the meantime it has grown into an important cultural carrier in the South Westphalia region . The association is a non-profit organization. All members are volunteers . An average of 50,000 viewers see the productions each season. There are around 200 volunteers working on the open-air stage. The open-air theater is financed to over 90 percent from the entrance fees, membership fees and donations. All of the money will be reinvested in the next season in order to be able to offer the audience new stage technology or equipment. The open-air stage is funded annually by the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and the city of Freudenberg .

The performances start at the beginning of June. The last curtain usually falls on the first weekend in September. In between there are around 60 performances in three months. There is one children's and one adult theater per season.

Child-friendly rating

In August 1997 the youth welfare offices of the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and the city of Siegen awarded the stage the title "child-friendly" for its longstanding, outstanding cultural work with children . The previous program design and the child-friendly productions were particularly recognized. An outstanding and most important criterion for the jury was also that children and young people are involved in the theater work on the open-air stage under the guidance of adults and are therefore actively on stage for their age groups.
