Atonement Cross Martinskirchen
The atonement cross of Martinskirchen is located west of the Martinskirchen cemetery , a district of the small town of Mühlberg / Elbe in southern Brandenburg in the Elbe-Elster district . Today it is registered as an official ground monument.
Description and history
This atonement cross is made of gray sandstone and has a size of 146 × 98 × 24 cm. The cross was probably erected as an atonement for murder or manslaughter.
Its original location was possibly near Brottewitz , where there is also a stone cross and a second, which was originally there, is considered lost. The stone cross is said to have served as a pedestrian bridge over the border ditch towards Brottewitz for a while and was later buried. In 1934 it came to its present location near the Martinskirchen village church
Further stone crosses in the urban area of Mühlberg are in Altenau and Brottewitz . Originally there was also a stone cross on Liebenwerdaer Straße in Mühlberg. This is said to have been lost during paving work on the road that passed the monastery wall.
legend
A legend reports that the Martinskirchen Atonement Cross was supposed to have been erected shortly after the Thirty Years' War . According to legend, a farmer from Altbelgern, who was considered missing, was killed by a relative on his return at the Grenzgraben who had accepted the abandoned farm and was now afraid of having to give it back to the farmer. As the murderer had a guilty conscience, he fled soon after his bloody act and was never seen again. According to another version, he is said to have drowned himself in the nearby Elbe .
Trivia
Immediately behind the atonement cross is a pedunculate oak . This is now a natural monument and is also under protection. In the ordinance on the establishment of trees as natural monuments in the Elbe-Elster district of June 21, 2011, the district specifies the protection purpose: regional history, individuality, beauty .
