The S. Karger AG in Basel is a biomedical specialist publisher . It is the largest scientific and medical specialist publisher in Switzerland .
history
The company was founded on April 1, 1890 in Berlin by Samuel Karger (1863–1935). In the same year the first book The Obstetrical Vademecum was published. The first specialist journal , the Dermatological Journal , appeared three years later .
Due to increasing reprisals under National Socialism , Samuel Karger's son Heinz (1895–1959) moved the company to Basel in 1937. After his death in 1959, Thomas Karger (1930–2020) took over the publishing house, which during this time developed into an internationally oriented company and now the largest scientific and medical specialist publisher in Switzerland. In 1968 the S. Karger GmbH was founded in Munich as an independent publishing location, which moved to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1992 .
From 1999 to 2008 Steven Karger (1959–2008) was a member of the executive board. After his death, his sister Gabriella Karger (* 1964) took over this function. The publishing house is still owned by the Kargers family and has the legal form of a stock corporation . Gabriella Karger is the publisher and president of the board of directors, Daniel Ebneter is the managing director (CEO).

Today S. Karger AG has 250 employees worldwide, a branch in Freiburg im Breisgau . Around 50 book titles appear each year. The publisher publishes around 100 medical and scientific journals, including open access journals . The sales share of magazines is 70%, that of books 30%.
