The SAP Solution Manager is a collection of tools , content and services offered by SAP to support the introduction and subsequent operation of your company applications.

SAP Solution Manager:

  • Tools: they support the end user in looking after solutions, for example in managing changes, in central monitoring or in the service desk.
  • Contents: they contain examples with solutions and methods for the company to present. For example: Roadmaps for implementation and upgrade projects, templates for the flow of business processes or a description of the procedure for IT organization tasks.
  • Services: Many services are offered by SAP Solution Manager. For example, Service Business Process Management ensures that a company-critical business process runs smoothly. As a further example of the various functionalities of the Solution Manager, various types of directory services can be mentioned.

overview

In most cases, the software is license-free for SAP customers. These tools are used to manage project information, monitoring data, problems, events and changes. In addition, the Solution Manager serves as a gateway to the customer infrastructure (especially to SAP NetWeaver ) so that the support desk can exchange SAP tickets and other data with the customer infrastructure. These tools are integrated into the SAP infrastructure that most customers have.

The functions of the tool collection can mainly be assigned to the software life cycle phases (ITIL Application Lifecycle Management Standard) "Introduction" and "Operation" of the SAP software products at the end customer.

Implementation support

The Solution Manager offers predefined roadmaps for different project types for this purpose . These essentially contain a milestone plan (typically project preparation, business blue print, implementation, final work with going-live and after-life support), which can be adapted for various implementation projects. In addition, there are documentation features for requirements, specifications and test cases as well as support for the creation of end user training courses for customer-specific business processes.

Operational support

The Solution Manager provides monitoring and administration functions at the infrastructure level to support the operational operation of the SAP software for SAP end customers. The Solution Manager offers two options for this:

  • System monitoring via the individual infrastructure components (such as SAP systems), or
  • Business process monitoring with the individual business process steps as entry points.

The same monitoring objects (e.g. ALE connections or batch processing) are used for both options.

The operation is further supported by the administration of the technical change requests. Such feature requests are constantly generated during ongoing operations at SAP end customers, since the environment of standard software such as SAP is constantly changing and developing. This can be reflected in ongoing tailoring of the SAP applications by the end customer IT departments and is preferably done through table parameterization ("customizing") but also through ABAP developments in the customer name space . The management of these change requests is possible in the Solution Manager using a fixed, predefined IT workflow that can be adjusted within narrow limits. The workflow has an interface for software distribution via the SAP change and transport management system ( SAP TMS ), which supports the distribution of tailoring in the test and productive rooms in simple SAP system environments.

In addition, the Solution Manager makes it easier to order some of the standardized SAP services such as B. Remote diagnosis or on-site advice.

Technical information

Up to version 7.1, the SAP Solution Manager was available as a dual-stack installation on all platforms approved by SAP (operating systems and databases). As of version 7.2, the ABAP instance and JAVA instance are separate, but both must be installed and operated. As of version 7.2, SAP HANA can also be used as a database.

It is based on the SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP and JAVA.
