No. 1578 with Belpaire kettle

The North British Locomotive Company delivered 40 machines in 1915, which were intended for the main route to East London and were slightly lighter than Class 14 . Due to the lower axle load, the pulling force also had to be reduced, which was achieved by reducing the boiler pressure and reducing the cylinder diameter by one inch (25.4 mm).

The locomotives could not satisfy on the route intended for them, and after a short time they were relocated to the western Cape Province and Eastern Transvaal , where they were used on the Cape Town - Beaufort West and Komatipoort - Waterval Boven routes . Later all machines were concentrated in the Eastern Transvaal.

All 14A were equipped with new standard boilers during their service life. The class name was changed to 14R (R as in reboilered ); So they were combined with the converted Class 14 machines. The former 14A were still recognizable, because they lacked the large sandboxes on the circuit.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the last copies were taken out of service. At least one machine, No. 1576, has been preserved.
