The vehicles with the numbers 1 to 6 of the Pretoria Pietersburg Railway (PPR) were tank locomotives with the wheel arrangement 1'C2 '.

The machines purchased by Beyer-Peacock in 1897 were the first South African locomotives with a Belpaire type standing boiler . The control was of the Walschaerts / Heusinger type.

When the PPR was taken over by the Central South African Railways (CSAR), the locomotives were given track numbers 209 to 214. The South African Railways (SAR) took over all six copies as class D in 1910 and gave them the numbers 56 to 61.

The locomotives were used in suburban traffic, for which part of them was relocated to the Cape Province . Around 1930 they were retired; no copy has survived.
