The locomotives of the class NG 5 of the South African Railways (SAR) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 1'D1 '(Mikado) for 600 mm narrow gauge ( NG stands for Narrow Gauge ).

The locomotives were built for the Otavibahn in South West Africa (today Namibia ) and largely corresponded in design to the three Hd series locomotives that had been purchased by the German administration in 1912. Like these, the new locomotives came from Henschel .

Cylinder dimensions, boiler pressure and drive wheel diameter and thus also the calculated pulling force of both types were the same. The locomotives had external frames and cylinders that worked on crank webs. The boiler was equipped with a superheater . The tender had four axles in order to be able to hold the supplies necessary on the long, arid stretch.

The only major difference between the Hd and the NG 5 was the equipping of the SAR locomotives with suction air brakes , while the German locomotives had air brakes . Visually, both classes can be distinguished by the design of the front section; the step in front of the smoke chamber door was set back in the NG 5 right up to the cylinder block. The arrangement of the front running axle just in front of the first coupled wheel set was retained, as can be seen from the cylinders that are further forward compared to the later NG 15 class .

The locomotives remained in service until their route was changed to Cape Gauge in 1960 and, unlike the successor class NG 15 based on them, were not relocated to South Africa, but decommissioned and scrapped. None of the locomotives have survived.
