The locomotives of the Hd series of the Otavi Mining and Railway Company (OMEG) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 1'D1 '(Mikado) for 600 mm narrow gauge ( NG stands for Narrow Gauge ). They were delivered by Henschel in 1912 .

All six axles of the locomotives were mounted in an external frame, with the two running axles also adjusting radially when shifted sideways. The front running axle was directly in front of the first coupling axle behind the cylinders. Driving and coupling rods were mounted on crank webs ; the boiler was equipped with a superheater . An unusual feature, which can also be found on other locomotives on the railway, were side flaps that were supposed to protect the engine from blown sand and dust.

The tender had four axles and was almost as heavy as the locomotive in order to be able to hold the necessary supplies on the long, arid stretch.

After Germany lost control of South West Africa in the First World War, the Otavibahn was transferred to the South African Railways (SAR, today Spoornet ) administration in 1922 . The locomotives kept their company numbers, which were only preceded by a "SW" in the book to avoid confusion with South African locomotives. The locomotives were not included in the SAR class scheme; they were simply referred to as Class Hd .

The locomotives were mainly used on the Swakopmund - Karibib section and remained in service until their route was changed to Cape Gauge in 1960. Two copies (No. 40 and 41) have been preserved as memorials.

The Hd series is the initial design of the SAR class NG 5, which was procured in 1922, as well as the NG 15 class, built from 1931 onwards , which is relatively well known because of its long service life and its continued use on tourist railways to this day. Cylinder dimensions, boiler pressure and drive wheel diameter and thus also the calculated pulling force were the same for all three types.

The OMEG series He was delivered in 1914, two years after the Hd series, but was never used by OMEG due to the war.
