When Tm 232 are at the Swiss Federal Railways two different biaxial Rangierfahrzeugtypen designated with diesel engines according to their modernization (SBB).

The designation corresponds to the seven-digit designation used by the SBB since 1990 . The “2” in the first position stands for shunting locomotives with an output of less than 500 kW, the “3” in the second position for diesel tractors, the “2” in the third position for an output between 200 and 299 kW.

In the case of both series of locomotives, not all vehicles were modernized. Vehicles that have not been converted will continue to be used or sold with the old designation. Some of the vehicles sold have also been entered in the national vehicle register as Tm 232.

A total of 52 Tm III were modernized and set as Tm 232 001-052. The new number can no longer be used to refer to the old one (Tm III 9501–9543, 9551–9597).

Private Tm 232 ex Tm III

Some of the Tm III sold remained in Germany and received TSI numbers. The last three digits of the SBB number were retained. The Tm 232 461 is therefore the former Tm 9461, 232 530 the former 9530.

SBB Tm 232 from Tm IV

The converted Tm IV 8751–8796 are given a number from the range 232 101–146, whereby the last two digits plus 50 correspond to the old number. The same will be done with the Tm IV 9651-9684, of which the modernized copies are given a number from the range 232 201-234. The first converted vehicle was the Tm 232 111-5 ex 8761 in 2007.
