SDMO plant KII France / Brest

SDMO ( Société de distribution de moteurs de l'Ouest ) is an industrial company specializing in generating sets based in Brest . SDMO is the European market leader and the third largest player worldwide in the power generation market and part of the Kohler Company Group.

Branches

SDMO employs around 850 people in all of its locations, most of them in Brest, and generates 70% of its turnover in exports.

history

In 1966, the Meunier group, an important industrial family in the region, founded SDMO in Brest. Guy Coisnon took over the management. SDMO (Société de distribution de moteurs de l'Ouest) ("Vertriebsgesellschaft für Motoren West") was specialized in trading marine engines at the time.

In 1969, SDMO Industries decided to devote part of its business to producing generator sets. Gradually, the company gave up its initial operations and only retained the industry of developing and manufacturing generator sets.

From 1970 to 1985 SDMO opened branches in France and signed its first contract on African soil.

In 1986 Électricité de France (EDF) started offers for EFP (effacement jour de pointe) [interruption on peak days]. With this cost-saving measure, SDMO was able to gain popularity on French soil and significantly increase its turnover. It then expanded its presence in Europe.

In the early 1990s, SDMO opened subsidiaries in Spain and England and finally in Singapore. In 1995 the company built a new factory and office complex with an area of 15,000 m² in Guipavas, in the Brest metropolitan area.

In 2001, three new subsidiaries were opened in Argentina, Brazil and the United States and a representative office in Algeria. A subsidiary in Belgium followed in 2003 and one in Nigeria in 2005.

In 2006 SDMO opened a representative office in Dubai, and in 2007 two new offices were opened in Johannesburg (South Africa) and Moscow (Russia).

In 2005 the Meunier family sold SDMO as well as two other of their companies, SOREEL and BES, to the KOHLER Col group, a multinational US company whose branch Kohler Power System also develops and manufactures generator sets. Jean-Marie Soula was appointed head of the company.

In 2006, KOHLER divided the geographical zones for marketing between SDMO and KPS in order to avoid the two brands being in competition. SDMO covers Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America. KOHLER will keep North America, Asia and Oceania.

In 2010 a subsidiary was founded in Germany and an extension of 15,000 m² to the production area of Guipavas, which opened its doors at the end of 2011, was built.

Products

The company developed the following products:

Portable Power are portable power generators with 1 to 15 kVA for welding generators and motorized water pumps.

Power Products are power generators from 7.5 to 3300 kVA from the industrial product range.

Rental Power are power generators from 2 to 2000 kVA, which are used for rental lighting masts and the construction industry.

Power Solutions are energy solutions that use the latest technologies.

Hybrid solutions are energy solutions that combine fossil and renewable energies (e.g. electricity generators in combination with solar cells and accumulators).

SDMO in Germany

SDMO has been selling its products in Germany since the mid-1980s. It all started with the help of the local German dealer, SCHICK GmbH. Schick GmbH, based in Zweibrücken ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) and around twenty employees, has been the brand's official sales partner since the early 1990s . She specialized in the sale of power generators, but is also active in the field of industrial equipment.

On September 1, 2010, SDMO GmbH emerged from the takeover of the power generator division of Schick GmbH.

Jean-Xavier Aufschneider took over the management of SDMO GmbH in Germany. SDMO GmbH has a warehouse with power generators from 1 to 800 kVA.
