Sercos III is the third generation of the Sercos interface series according to IEC / EN 61491 on the basis of standard Ethernet IEEE 802.3 - Ethernet MAC and PHY without modifications. Sercos III is an open protocol for real-time automation at the IEC (International Electric / Electrotechnical Commission) and is therefore part of the international standards IEC 61800-7 , IEC 61784 and IEC 61158 .

Sercos is actively supported internationally by over 50 control, over 30 drive and more than 40 other device manufacturers. The further development of the standard takes place within the user organization Sercos International (SI). This monitors global compliance with the standard and offers members support for development, conformity tests, marketing, etc.

Sercos series

The digital drive interface Sercos interface, launched in 1985, has developed into a globally accepted standard for all motion control- based automation systems since the early 1990s . Their attractiveness is based on the good properties in terms of real time, performance and immunity to interference, as well as the large, available product range of many providers. Since 1995, Sercos interface has been the global standard for communication for motion control as IEC 61491. The Sercos PACK Profile application profile was defined for consistent interoperability in packaging machines. Sercos has an installed base of more than 4 million installed Sercos nodes in more than 400,000 applications worldwide.

Typical Sercos III performance data

  • 8 drives with 8 bytes of cyclically transmitted data in 31.25 µs
  • 70 drives with 12 bytes of cyclically transmitted data in 250 µs
  • 150 drives with 32 bytes of cyclically transmitted data in 1000 µs
  • 254 drives with 16 bytes of cyclically transmitted data in 1000 µs
