The SG Weißensee was an East Berlin sports community that was based in the former northern district of Weißensee . Her successor is the registered association SG Weißensee 49.

overview

The beginnings of the Weissensee sports community go back to the first few years after the end of the Second World War , when loosely organized sports communities were allowed to be founded instead of the forbidden sports clubs to continue sports. The SG Weißensee participated in the Berlin soccer championship as early as 1945/46, until 1949 the SG offered the sports fishing, soccer, handball, bowling, wrestling, chess and swimming. The boxing, hockey and gymnastics sections were added later. Between 1949 and 1953 the athletes competed as the “Sportclub Weißensee”. The Buschallee stadium was available for outdoor sports. The SG Weißensee represented a peculiarity in the sports policy of the GDR , as it had not placed itself under the system of company sports associations and thus waived the organizational and financial support of a sponsoring company . When after the political change of 1990 in East Germany clubs could be founded again under German law, the SG Weißensee was transformed into the "SG Weißensee 49 eV", which continues the tradition of the previous sports community in wrestling and chess.

Sporting record

Handball

The handball section had the greatest successes. In the post-war years, both men and women were among the top teams in overall Berlin field handball . In 1946 and 1947 the men and 1947 the women won the Berlin championship. Until 1950, SC Weißensee remained the best East Berlin team in the overall Berlin field handball league for men. After the East Berlin sports communities split off from all of Berlin's sports traffic in 1950, the successes of the Weißenseers shifted to indoor handball, where the men in 1950 and the women in 1952 won the GDR championship.

Soccer

As early as 1945/46 the football champions were determined in all of Berlin. 36 sports communities took part in the preliminary round, including SG Weißensee. As the bottom of the group retired early. In the following seasons the SG and the SC rose to the 1st football class, the 3rd overall Berlin league. From the 1950/51 season onwards, East Berlin sport had split off from all of Berlin and set up separate leagues for football. In the state class (1st East Berlin League) also the SC Weißensee was incorporated, but did not have the required level of play and was relegated after one season. He was relegated to the district class, where the Weißenseer, now appearing again as a sports community, stayed until 1956. After that, the district class was reduced from two to one season, and as the sixth team SG Weißensee had to relegate to East Berlin's 1st soccer class and thus found itself in the 6th soccer league in GDR soccer. A promotion to the higher leagues was not achieved again.
