from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SICRAL ( Sistema Italiano per Comunicazioni Riservate ed Allarmi - German: "Italian system for secret communication and emergencies") is the name of the satellite-based communication system of the Italian armed forces . The SICRAL system consists of two satellites , a ground station in Vigna di Valle near Rome and the terminals of the users involved (aircraft, ships, mobile land forces).

In 2001, the military communications satellite SICRAL 1 went into operation, followed by the SICRAL 1B satellite on April 20, 2009 . The original plan was to replace SICRAL 1 with SICRAL 2 in 2013 , but the satellite was only launched in April 2015.
