SICRAL 1 is a military communication satellite of the Italian armed forces and part of the Sistema Italiano per Comunicazioni Riservate ed Allarmi (German: "Italian system for secret communication and emergencies"). The SICRAL system consists of two satellites , a ground station and the terminals of the users involved.

satellite

SICRAL 1 is the first military satellite in Italy . It was built by the SITAB consortium on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defense: Alenia Spazio (70% share) built the satellite, Avio (20%) was responsible for the propulsion system and Telespazio (10%) realized the ground station in Vigna di Valle north of Rome . The satellite was on 7 February 2001, together with Skynet 4F of an Ariane 4 - rocket into space brought and then in its geostationary orbit position of 16.2 ° East. The 2596 kg SICRAL 1 is operated in the SHF , EHF and UHF areas. A total of nine transponders are available. The satellite ensures communication between the ground station and ships, aircraft and mobile land forces.

SICRAL 1 was originally supposed to remain in operation until 2018, but its operation will likely be extended until at least 2020.

successor

In 2006, the Italian Ministry of Defense signed a contract to build another communications satellite called SICRAL 1B , which went into operation at the end of April 2009. The name SICRAL 2 initially stood for the replacement satellite for SICRAL 1, now it is used as the name for a new satellite that was launched on April 26, 2015.
