Thales Alenia Space , TAS for short , builds satellites and develops components for civil and military space technology . The company is 33 percent owned by the Italian Leonardo SpA and 67 percent by the Thales Group . Thales took over the French stake of 67 percent in 2006 from Alcatel and Alcatel-Lucent . The company's headquarters are in Cannes with a further ten locations in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and, since 2011, also in Germany and since 2016 also in Switzerland. Together with Telespazio it forms the new Space Alliance of Thales and Leonardo-Finmeccanica.

The Thales Alenia Space emerged on April 5, 2006 from the company Alcatel Alenia Space (AAS). The reason for this was that Thales took over 67% of Alcatel and Alcatel-Lucent. AAS was created on June 1, 2005 through the merger of Alenia Spazio (Italy) and Alcatel Space (France).

Thales Alenia Space also participates in the European satellite navigation system Galileo .

In 2007, Thales Alenia Space employed 7,200 people at 13 locations in five countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the USA).

Satellite bus systems are used as the basis for satellites . B. carry the names Spacebus 3000 or Spacebus 4000 and can be used in different variants depending on the requirements ( e.g. Spacebus 4000 C3 ).

In March 2014, the work on the Stratobus project became known, the prototype of which should be completed within five years. It is a solar-powered rigid airship that is supposed to work geostationarily at an altitude of around 20 km and replace satellites.
