SKC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SKC was the common name in the aviation weather service for cloudless sky. In November 2008 this was replaced by the ICAO with the name Nil significant clouds (NSC). However, SKC is still used in many places, for example by the German GAFOR (aviation weather) forecast, in North America, Mexico, Chile, Russia, Sweden and some Asian countries.

SKC stands for "sky clear" ( degree of cloudiness below 1 eighth) and corresponds to level 0/8 or 0/10 of the local weather services or the synopsis . The other levels are abbreviated as follows in flight meteorology :

  • 1/8 and 2/8 "few" (FEW) for low cloud cover,
  • 3/8 and 4/8 "scattered" (SCT) for loosened clouds,
  • 5/8 to 7/8 "broken" (BKN) for a broken cloud cover
  • and 8/8 "overcast" (OVC) for a closed cloud cover.

The grades 7–8 / 8 are called “overcast” in meteorology, and in everyday language with dark clouds they are also called “cloudy”.
