The SKL Westerhüsen landfill is a survey going back to a landfill in the Westerhüsen district of the city of Magdeburg .

In the GDR era, the mechanical engineering company VEB Schwermaschinenbau “Karl Liebknecht” (SKL), located in Magdeburg- Salbke , operated a landfill to the south-west of the Wellenberge ridge on the Am Wellenberge road . In the early 1990s, the landfill ceased operations.

In 2004, MDSE Mitteldeutsche Sanierungs- und Entsorgungsgesellschaft mbH took over ownership. The MDSE will recultivate the landfill by 2012. Here, a 1.35 meter thick layer of soil is applied to the landfill in order to prevent the penetration of water into the landfill body and the flushing of toxins into the groundwater. Before that, the surface of the landfill should be designed so that certain degrees of inclination are not exceeded. In preparation for the measures, from the beginning of January 2011 the woody vegetation that had developed over about 20 years was removed in large parts, which led to local residents protests. After the renovation has been completed, it is planned to replant native deciduous trees. The landfill should then be left to natural processes, whereby an adaptation to the neighboring ridges of the Wellenberge, Frohser Berg and Sohlener Berge is hoped.
