The Sporta Kluba Liepājas Metalurgs was a Latvian sports club from Liepāja in Courland , Latvia .
history
The name giver and financier of the association was the metalworking company Liepājas Metalurgs . In November 2013, the owner and his Liepājas Metalurgs filed for bankruptcy, whereupon the sports club also went bankrupt.
The club consisted of two football departments (women and men), a women's basketball team and a male ice hockey team .
ice Hockey
The club's flagship was the ice hockey department, which became five times Latvian champions between its founding in 1997 and its dissolution in 2013.
Hall
The team plays their home games in the 3,000-seat Olimpiskā ledus hall .
Soccer
The football department emerged in 1997 from the Olimpija Liepāja club founded in Liepaja in 1909. In 1998 and 1999, the club was able to win the runner-up. In 2006, after a 2-1 win after extra time against Skonto Riga, they became the first Latvian cup winners since independence from Latvia. A year earlier, in 2005, they became champions for the first time in Latvia.
The women's football division won the Latvian championship for the first time in 2010 and played in the UEFA Women's Champions League for the first time in the 2011/2012 season . After the Liepājas Metalurgs went bankrupt, the association was dissolved. The football department was re-established as FK Liepāja by former members of the board of directors of FK Liepājas Metalurgs in February 2014 .
Stadion
The men's, women's and youth teams play their home games at the Daugava Stadium in Liepāja .
basketball
The women's basketball department has played in the Latvian Women's Basketball League (LSBL) since 2005.
