The Supernova SN2005cs (amateur shot)

The supernova SN 2005cs was a Type II supernova that flared up on June 28, 2005 in the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). SN 2005cs was discovered by accident by Wolfgang Kloehr using amateur means. Since M51 is a very prominent galaxy, high-resolution photographs from telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope already existed before the supernova . As a result, scientists were able to identify the exploded star on an earlier image afterwards.
