SOKIMEX is the largest oil company in Cambodia .

Sokimex was founded after Vietnamese troops invaded Cambodia in 1979 to secure the country's supply of fuel. The head of Sokimex Sok Kong was also president of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce in Phnom Penh until 2007 - in this role he was the successor of the tycoon Teng Bunma .

From 1999 to 2016, Sokimex collected the entrance fees in Angkor : between 20 and 60 US dollars per visitor, depending on the length of stay. The company now also owns two luxury hotels in Sihanoukville (2004) and Siem Reap (2005).

In addition to Sokimex, the Cambodian company Tela is dominant in the field of mineral oil marketing in the country. Foreign corporations ( Caltex , Total , BP , Petronas ), on the other hand, play a subordinate role.

Significant oil reserves are suspected within the territorial waters of Cambodia. The exploitation has so far failed due to unclear maritime borders with neighboring Thailand.
