The SPAD S.XI was a French military aircraft that was used in the First World War .

development

The success of the single-seat hunter S.VII prompted the SPAD company to make another attempt to create a two-seat model (a first design called SPAD S.VIII did not get beyond the project stage). So in 1917 the design of the S.VII was adopted, enlarged geometrically and thus the S.XI was created, which was to be used as a reconnaissance aircraft and artillery observer, but also as an attack aircraft. The first machines arrived at the front in August 1917 and several French, American and Belgian squadrons were equipped with the model. In use, however, the type turned out to be too inefficient and difficult to control for the pilot. At least in the French associations, the type was therefore eliminated from July 1918.

As a further development, the more powerfully motorized S.XVI with Lorraine-Dietrich 8Fb engine (235 hp) was created in 1918, but only a very small series was built.
